Canada-based pension fund Alberta Investment Management has named Kevin Bong as senior managing director, chief investment strategist and head of Singapore.His appointment, which takes effect in August, will see Bong head up the pension fund’s newly established Singapore office.
He joins from Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC where he was managing director, director of economics and investment strategy.
Alberta , which has roughly US$135 billion in assets, is one of several Canadian pension funds to have set up shop in Singapore. Other pension funds include Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ).
Meanwhile, CDPQ is planning to close its China office and will no longer make private deals in the country as a result of intensifying political tensions between Canada and China.
The news comes on the back of a parliamentary hearing in Canada in May which raised the issue of Canadian pension funds’ investments in China.
