Editorial: China’s bounceback

Romil_PatelChina enters the Year of the Ox in good shape, with economic growth aleady back at pre-crisis levels. GDP rose 6.5% in Q4 2020, making it the only major economy to have grown. The country’s bounceback was partly due to ridged measures to prevent transmission of the virus, as well as increased industrial production (7% YoY as of November) and higher retail sales (5%). In addition, household savings in the first nine months of 2020 reached 37%, a high compared to the two previous years, which is a positive sign for domestic demand. If the economic situation shows sustained improvement, this will provide Chinese authorities with some leeway to ease the extraordinary stimulus measures taken to fight the impact of the virus. However, China will also need to manage high volatility until Covid-19 is largely overcome and show increasing signs of progress to meet its target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. Geopolitical tensions and the cascading impacts in an intrinsically linked world are another major talking point in the investment sphere. ESG is now an unavoidable fixture on the agenda, inherently linked to China’s growth path. The question is: how is China putting the 2060 carbon-neutrality target into practice, and how is the green choice set to grow, with all the exciting opportunities that entails?
